Born To Be Wild

8 October 2017

I just love the beginning of a new season – great excuse to shop 🙂
Let’s be honest, who really needs an excuse?

I found this top in London and I hardly needed to try it on to know I just had to have it.

I’m drawn to any and everything animal print as of late. It works so well with denim, leather, color and it’s great if you’re brave enough to mix prints. Plus, it’s a fun way to spruce up your wardrobe without spending a lot. What are you looking for this season?

If you’re not sure if a print is for you, a great way to try it out is by buying an accessory (like a scarf or bag) in an animal print to get a feel for it. Accessories really can MAKE an outfit.

The One With The Shacket

17 September 2017

Fall has arrived in Holland and it’s making me bring out all my favorite layers.
My Mom found this little gem of a shacket at a boutique in Oregon and passed it down to me (because let’s be honest, the window of opportunity to wear a light weight jacket is slim-to-none in Texas). So, thanks Mom 🙂

In case you’re wondering what a shacket is, let me help you out:
A heavier button down shirt that can also be worn as a light jacket (great for layering).

I love layering this time of the year, when the temperature is just right for bare ankles but crisp enough to wear long sleeves.

If you’re in a style rut and don’t know what to wear this time of the year, think about investing in a layering piece that can be worn with the basics you already have hanging in your closet.
Grab your go-to jeans, favorite tee and booties and your new layering piece for a fresh, casual fall look.

Great, affordable shacket options for all ages can be found at:

Zara
H&M
Target
Nordstrom

Shop Bree’s Look:
Shacket: similar can be found at Zara or H&M
Tee: H&M
Jeans: Zara
Booties: & Other Stories
Neckerchief: Madewell
Bag: H&M

Back To School In Style

15 August 2017

I’ve been seeing all these posts on social media about everyone’s kids going back to school (side note: some of which are kids of people MY age which makes me feel basically ancient) this week and it made me ready for my ‘Back To School’ wardrobe.

Is that still a thing? If you’re an adult and have been out of school for a solid 5 years?
If it’s not a thing, let’s make it one (if for no one else but yourself).

I love the change of seasons (although I’m desperately holding on to the last month of summer in Holland) and a reason to refresh your style.

How you can refresh your style seasonally:

TRENDS
Start taking notice of the big trends coming up for the next season and do your research. If you’re on a budget, it’s important to invest in pieces you can wear for months (or even years) to come. So what if you’re not into High Fashion? Taking notice of upcoming trends could be as simple as watching The Today Show and seeing what the hosts are wearing on a daily basis. Trend watching for you could be walking into Anthropologie’s store to get a feel for the new collection.

PINBOARD
Make a Pinboard on Pinterest. My sister and I make a collaborative board every season. This helps us narrow down what we really ‘need’ and gives us an extra opportunity to communicate half way across the world.

TRY STUFF ON
Not sure if ruffles are for you? Take the time to visit a few stores and see if they’re ‘your thing’. There’s nothing worse than forcing yourself to jump on board with a trend that just doesn’t feel like you. Personal style should be comfortable and most importantly, an extension of you.

COMMIT
Once you’ve gotten inspired, put together your look and feel confident – it’s time to buy! There’s no better feeling than walking out of a store with new pieces that you absolutely love and that give you an extra spring in your step. Shopping shouldn’t be stressful, it should be FUN!!

Time to get your Back To School shopping started!

Skirt: H&M (also on sale!)

Transition Must Have

30 July 2017

What is it about old band tees that always catch my eye?
Well…I guess that goes for basically anything black. 🙂

I love this look because it gives off a carefree vibe with a touch of feminism.
This outfit says, ‘I didn’t wake up like this but it only took me 20 min to get ready’.

Leather skirts that are long enough to wear with bare legs can be hard to find.
The key? Go for a leather material that doesn’t hug your every curve in an uncomfortable way and one that complements your figure.

I used to limit leather (rather, pleather) to cooler weather but now that I live in a place with a mild summer climate, leather can be worn year round. Leather jacket? Must have transition piece. Leather skirt? Perfect with bare legs and a tee or with tights and a blouse in a few months.

My rule of thumb for shopping:
One thing I try to keep in mind when shopping this time of the year is how long I will be able to wear the pieces I’m buying. As we are moving into cooler months, it’s good to buy pieces that you can not only wear now but also later on. Well, unless it’s a really, really good deal…then do what your heart tells you. 🙂

Shop Bree’s Look:

Band Tee: Zara (but can be found at a lot of major retailers. Hint: size up for a boxier fit)
Leather Skirt: H&M
Loafers: Steve Madden via Nordstrom Rack
Bucket Tote: Nordstrom
Sunglasses: Forever 21

Sweet Summertime

18 July 2017

I’ve been a little ‘out of pocket’ via the blog lately.
Not because I haven’t wanted to take the time to catch up with you guys but mostly because we’ve just been enjoying one of my (and probably yours, too) favorite times of the year: SUMMER.

Now that I live in Holland I can truly appreciate the beautiful thing that is Summer:
-it’s light until well after 10 pm
-if the sun shines the temperature quickly rises to a degree of absolute perfection (aka rarely above 80 degrees)
-we get ice cream almost every night after dinner (full disclosure). 🙂

Since my last post we went to Hawaii, which was a TOTAL dream by the way (currently editing my video, to follow later this weekend…). I cannot say enough good things about the magical islands. Well, anyway, more on that later.

How is your summer going?

Do you find it hard to get inspired when it comes to your wardrobe when it’s so warm outside? Feel like you’ve worn it all before?
This look is paired with my fave MOM jeans and flatforms. I added a ruffle blouse to freshen the look up and threw on my Bauble Bar inspired earrings for something fun. I have had all of these pieces for a while, but never thought about combining them, which gave me a ‘new’ feeling. 🙂

Shop Bree’s Look:

Blouse: Mango
Jeans: H&M
Flatforms: Zara
Earrings: similar to Bauble Bar
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

May Flowers

10 May 2017

I am back after a few weeks of silence. Life has been busy. My mom came to visit, I went to Texas, and somewhere in the middle of all of that we are trying to finalize some stuff for our house. Exciting times 🙂

In case you’ve ever wondered…

One of the best things about living in Holland?
All the beautiful flowers this time of the year.

Sure, we get a lot of rain and it rarely reaches a temperature above 70F, but on those sunny days when the fields of flowers come alive make all those dreary, gray days (kinda) worth it. 🙂

If you ever have the chance to visit Holland in the Spring, jump at the chance.

My mom and I had a blast during her visit to the Land of The Dutch. The only thing on our to-do list (other than just hang) was to see the tulips. We rented bikes and rode for miles and miles through the tulip fields.
It was very relaxing and enjoyable (ok, aside from the wind working against us on the way back).

I was feeling pretty good about our cycling skills until we were passed by a few very large group of 70-year-olds on more than one occasion. The Dutch elderly community really knows how to enjoy their ‘golden years’. 🙂

Do ya’ll get out and enjoy the great outdoors as much as you can?

That Time My Husband Called Me Ugly

9 April 2017

So, in a turn of events during dinner last night my dear husband may or may not have called me ‘ugly’.

I’d like to clarify that it was not his intention to do so and we have laughed about it many times since. 😉

Backstory: We bought a house (YAY!!) and have been looking at all of the floor plan options, kitchen ideas, layout, design ideas, etc. We were having a discussion about something house-related which is when I told him to ‘not be ugly’ as I could tell he was growing more irritated by the second.

His response? “No, you’re ugly.”
(immediately followed by us both bursting out in laughter as he knew what just came out of his mouth meant something very different than what he ACTUALLY meant to say.)

Being married to a ‘foreigner’ never fails to bring a lot of laughs (both me laughing at him and him laughing at me, case in point: the way I get on a bike – like a horse, obviously…just like every American I know). Never a dull moment. 🙂

In other news, I am loving these silk (like) printed pants. They are cropped and wide, which is a shape that is very much in right now. What I love about the length of these pants is that they can be worn with flats or platform sandals later on this summer.

Also, I’ll be wearing shades until my allergies calm down. Like honestly, this is a very accurate description of how I feel today:

Stripe Everything

2 April 2017

Lately I’ve been loving everything striped.
What is it about this time of the year that brings out the (albeit small) amount of nautical vibe in me?

Stripes are fresh, can be worn casually or with class, and are appropriate for every age.
They are easy to pair with and add a touch of fun to just about any outfit.

Stripes also remind me of the non-chalant French style that continues to inspires most bloggers and fashionistas around the world (myself included).
I was in Paris last week and leather jackets, messy-hair-just-right, minimal makeup (like ‘i didn’t try that hard this morning’), stripes & scuffed up Stan Smiths were all the rage.

Dirty Stan Smiths from last year? No problem.
Slept through your alarm and don’t have time to wash your hair? Dry Shampoo (the messier the better).

So let’s all embrace our flaws because trying to be perfect is SO overrated (and exhausting).

Bree’s (continued) Spring Wardrobe Essentials:
Striped item
White sneakers
Army jacket

p.s. what do you guys think about my ‘old people’ shoes? Maybe I’ll trade them in for my worn-in Stan Smiths next time. 😉

Pale On Fleek

26 March 2017

I am loving all of the Spring flowers and trees blooming.
It brings a feeling a newness and just downright happiness.

Also, JZ and I finally found the house that we have been waiting for (or maybe it’s the house that has been waiting for US). 🙂

It will take a while for it to be built (like over a year), so in the meantime, I am pinning like it’s my job (check out: Casa di Zwijnenburg for a little taste) and dreaming of this adorable Dutch abode that will be ours in 2018.

I can’t tell you how many times I have searched ‘tiny walk in closet’ on Pinterest. 😉

In other news, I am loving this rugged, oversized sweater.
I have a boho soul and this oversized sweater was definitely speaking my language.
So much so, I seriously considered buying it in the other 2 colors it comes in (green and blush). Overkill much?

This sweater is perfect for a sunny, Spring day that isn’t quite warm enough for a tshirt. Paired with a bandana and my wannabe Isabel Marant booties for a Parisian inspired look.

Side out: I’ll be looking for the nearest spray tan ASAP.

Bandana: Madewell

All Things Spring Please

19 March 2017

Alright peeps, after a short break I am back and SO ready for Spring!
We were teased with sunshine and no rain last week here in the Land of Tulips & Cheese, which got me ready for some warmer temps! Plus I’ve been seeing all you Texans in shorts and sandals which is giving me serious weather envy. 🙂
Until we hit 70, I’ll be bringing my Spring A-game in bright colored knitwear and lace.

So if you’re wondering what key items you really ‘need’ this Spring season, it would be ruffles, anything velvet and Mom jeans.
I know what you’re thinking, velvet outside of winter? Yes, my friend, yes.
I love the color of these booties and the way it breaks up the casual vibe.

Mom jeans were a bit harder to find. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t try on at least 30 pairs of jeans before I decided on these. There are largely oversized versions of Mom jeans and slightly more straight-leg Mom jean options. I went for the safer option this time around so I can get the most wear out of them.
What do y’all think?

Happy Spring shopping!
