Pale On Fleek

26 March 2017

I am loving all of the Spring flowers and trees blooming.
It brings a feeling a newness and just downright happiness.

Also, JZ and I finally found the house that we have been waiting for (or maybe it’s the house that has been waiting for US). 🙂

It will take a while for it to be built (like over a year), so in the meantime, I am pinning like it’s my job (check out: Casa di Zwijnenburg for a little taste) and dreaming of this adorable Dutch abode that will be ours in 2018.

I can’t tell you how many times I have searched ‘tiny walk in closet’ on Pinterest. 😉

In other news, I am loving this rugged, oversized sweater.
I have a boho soul and this oversized sweater was definitely speaking my language.
So much so, I seriously considered buying it in the other 2 colors it comes in (green and blush). Overkill much?

This sweater is perfect for a sunny, Spring day that isn’t quite warm enough for a tshirt. Paired with a bandana and my wannabe Isabel Marant booties for a Parisian inspired look.

Side out: I’ll be looking for the nearest spray tan ASAP.

All Things Spring Please

19 March 2017

Alright peeps, after a short break I am back and SO ready for Spring!
We were teased with sunshine and no rain last week here in the Land of Tulips & Cheese, which got me ready for some warmer temps! Plus I’ve been seeing all you Texans in shorts and sandals which is giving me serious weather envy. 🙂
Until we hit 70, I’ll be bringing my Spring A-game in bright colored knitwear and lace.

So if you’re wondering what key items you really ‘need’ this Spring season, it would be ruffles, anything velvet and Mom jeans.
I know what you’re thinking, velvet outside of winter? Yes, my friend, yes.
I love the color of these booties and the way it breaks up the casual vibe.

Mom jeans were a bit harder to find. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t try on at least 30 pairs of jeans before I decided on these. There are largely oversized versions of Mom jeans and slightly more straight-leg Mom jean options. I went for the safer option this time around so I can get the most wear out of them.
What do y’all think?

Happy Spring shopping!

Twenty Six

12 February 2017

This past week I celebrated my 26th birthday and to say I was spoiled would be a big understatement. A huge THANK YOU to all of the people in my life that made my day extra special.

I have been looking for cute printed dresses since last summer when I got inspired by Scandinavian street style. The moment I saw this dress I knew I had to have it—semi-fitted in all the right places, black with a print that can be worn year ’round, and just the right amount of playful sophistication. In other words: everything you could possibly want in a dress. 🙂

This week, after spotting my first wrinkle (can you believe it??), I began to think of all the perks that come with getting older. I have started to settle into my style as I’ve grown more comfortable in my own skin and have learned what works for me and what doesn’t.

I want to be Bree, not anyone else.

With age, I also notice that I’m becoming more intentional with my purchases. Rather than just looking for a great deal or following every trend that passes by, I now can recognize what lines up with my style and be strategic about purchases (like this dress!) that will compliment what is already in my closet.

I am also learning to identify the “missing pieces” in my life. If I realize I’m not wearing certain things, I try to identify something that is missing to enjoy them more. Maybe it’s a pair of jeans in just the right shade or a boot that is casual with a low heel.
Most times, there is one thing that might make several other pieces come to life in my wardrobe. Those are the missing pieces I want to identify and invest in. This theory also applies in bigger parts of my life.

This year, when thinking about the downtime in my weekends or weeknights, I noticed that my go-to activities were shopping or catching up on some Netflix shows. Don’t get me wrong—still love those two things! But I resolved to get more out of my free time, to make it count for other purposes, like learning a new skill or trying a new recipe or going somewhere new.
So far, living out this resolution has looked like baking a blueberry lemon cake, taking up a bootcamp workout, reading books I always say I’m going to get around to, and booking a trip to Hawaii (in just over 3 months but who’s counting??)…

So in this year of 26, I’m going to lean in to that mindset. I’m vowing to enjoy the present, “be Bree”, shop smarter, and make a priority those things that feed my soul and not just fill the time. Thanks for coming along on the journey.

Go-To Color

29 January 2017

Am I the only one that has a ‘go to’ color?
I love any shade of a green, but specifically a green with a hint of brown.
No matter how pale I am (at the moment VERY ) this color works. Although I think we can all agree, everything looks better on after a week at the beach. 🙂

As there are no beaches in my immediate future, my pale self will be reaching for earthy tones and facial bronzer.

What color is your ‘go-to’?

If you’re not sure, ask your Mom, sister, or best friend (and as a last resort your husband because he will most likely, or should, tell you every color looks good on you). 🙂

Side note: I found this sweater at Nordstrom Rack and didn’t even have time to try it on before buying. Literally ran into Nordstrom Rack with my sister and Mom at 8:50 p.m. with 10 whole minutes to score something good. I’d say we were pretty successful at speed shopping ’cause we all took home some goodies and I’ve been wearing this sweater and booties on repeat since Christmas.

If Supermarket Sweep is still a thing, somebody sign us up.

Spring Teaser

15 January 2017

So while we were in Texas over the holidays, the weather was absolutely perfect.
I’m talking blue skies, sunshine, short-sleeves-welcome kinda weather. Unseasonably warm, even for the Lone Star State.
I guess I had temporarily forgotten what it felt like to walk outside and not need a jacket.

Now we are back to the true winter (seriously I think it is snowing as I type), and there is a good chance we will be wearing our sweaters well into April. *brrrr*
But that Spring time teaser sure was sweet while it lasted.

In the mean time, I will enjoy the snow covered houses, hot tea & comfort food.

One of the trends I love every spring is a military jacket. By far a staple piece you should have in your closet. It pairs well with dresses, denim, and can be worn with cut-offs when the weather allows. So for you Texans, I would invest in a military-inspired quickly, because the chances of you getting to wear it in the near future are very high. 🙂

Happy 2017

4 January 2017

Happy 2017, friends!!

I’ve got a good feeling about this year, how about you?
The start of a new year brings a lot of hope, goals and well-intended eating habits (especially after our 10 day eating tour of Texas). 😉

What are some of your New Years Resolutions this year?

This year, I’m going to:
Worry less, trust God more
Savor life to the fullest
Become the healthiest version of myself
Enjoy my free time more
And on a less serious note: buy items for my wardrobe that will last longer and become a closet staple vs. a trend piece

Glam It Up

18 December 2016

The holidays are  just around the corner, y’all!!
We are in full-Christmas preparation here at the Zwijnenburg Casa.
Christmas music is basically on 24/7 and that Netflix crackling fireplace keeps our humble abode quite cozy (or gezellig for any of you Dutchies reading 🙂 ).

Have you thought about what you’ll be wearing during the holidays? Around our house Christmas Eve tends to be the night we dress up followed by a comfy, more casual Christmas.

So this year I am thinking about my options ahead of time as we will be on a plane to Texas come Thursday morning.

*cue Hallelujah chorus*

So, without further ado, I give you: Glam It Up

Metallics are always an easy way to dress up basic black without having to buy an entire outfit (not that I don’t enjoy buying an entirely new outfit 😉 ).

This year all you’ll need to spice up your look is:
-A pleated metallic skirt (my obsession with pleated skirts continues)
-Basic black top with trumpet sleeves  (if you’re in charge of Christmas Eve dinner I would like to mention trumpet sleeves are not very practical for cooking purposes)
-Black tights
-Black booties
-Metallic statement necklace
-Your go-to leather jacket (mine may or may not be from Santa and I may or may not officially be able to wear it yet 😉 Man, Santa has such good taste).

You can find my look at:
Skirt: H&M (runs big, size down – also in gold and black)
Top: Zara
Leather Jacket: Zara, I mean Santa
Booties: Dolce Vita
Necklace: Old, Forever 21

Enjoy your Christmas preparations, friends!

Holiday No-Brainer

4 December 2016

So Christmas is just around the corner (22 days if any of you aren’t counting out there) and that means the coming month will be filled with giving, Christmas music and FOOD.

I love this time of the year for a lot of reasons, but one of the top reasons would have to be all the yummy treats and holiday sweets at every social event.

But what’s a girl to do when you just can’t pass up Christmas cookies & Hot Chocolate?

Buy a bigger sweater. 🙂

Dressing up for the holidays can be really fun, but there’s nothing quite as comfy as leggings and an oversized sweater to keep you cozy.

I love these leather leggings because they make me feel one step up from normal leggings yet ike I’m still wearing my yoga pants.

Oversized sweaters come in a variety of styles, so whether you’re 14 or 40, there’s one for your shape. Make sure you find a sweater that is long enough to cover your tush, because as we all (should) know:

Business As Usual

13 November 2016

So it is officially ‘sweater weather’ in Holland.
And by sweater weather, I really mean it is literally freezing in the morning. Brrrrrrr.

What’s a girl to do when you don’t want to mess with tights but need something dressier than jeans?

give yourself a TROUSER UPDATE.

Think work attire with a trendy facelift (no more of those old school ‘dress pants’ we used to buy from Dillard’s).

You can pair your menswear-inspired style trousers with an oversized sweater or cardigan.
Feeling sporty? Throw on your Stan Smith’s with this look to tone down the workwear vibe.

Trousers: Maison Scotch
Tee: Pull & Bear
Cardigan: Costes
Shoes: &Other Stories

Somewhere Between A Jacket & A Bathrobe

30 October 2016

One of the many reasons autumn is one of my favorite times of year is because you can dress in light layers without feeling HUUUGE (in the Trump voice, obvi).

There is a small window of time when a proper coat isn’t totally necessary. That’s when I like to fake it with an oversized cardigan, also known as the Coatigan.

It doubles for style and warmth and to be quite honest, kind of reminds me of my bath robe.
What’s not to love?

Pair it with your favorite distressed denim and you’re all set. Plus if you’ve got a lot of running around to do, it’s comfy and fuss-free (especially for you moms reading). 🙂

How’s Fall where you are?

The trees have changed colors here, it’s absolutely gorgeous. I didn’t grow up in a place where the leaves properly turn into fall colors (see Texas seasons: Hot & HOTTER), so every year around this time I am still amazed at the pretty hues around me.

You can find your fall must have Coatigan at (size up if you want it to be more oversized):
Zara (mine is from last year)
Forever 21
