Local Life

21 August 2016

A few weeks ago I was able to meet my very talented photographer friend in Utrecht for this session (you can followΒ him on Instagram: river.dreamer).

One of the things I love most about living abroad is the beautiful scenery that surrounds me daily. I’m sure most locals don’t find it nearly as special as this ol’ Texan, but when most people live in houses that are older than your actual country, it’s pretty unique.

Top 5 Things I Never Knew I Liked (Until I Moved To Holland):

  1. Old houses…like really old, rustic, crooked-window, narrow, filled-with-character homes.
  2. Walking…to dinner, to shops, to cafes, to church. Parking can be tricky, so walking is pretty unavoidable in the tiny streets of Europe. But how refreshing is it to enjoy the Great Outdoors regularly?
  3. Getting lost…this one took some time to appreciate, but living abroad does not allow you the daily comfort of knowing where everything is. So I’ve learned to accept that getting lost is just part of the deal, and while you wander, don’t forget to look up.
  4. The hilarious amount of times Dutch people say ‘bye’ before hanging up the phone. If you’ve been around Dutch people, you will understand. It is never just one, ‘Talk to you later, bye” as in America, but rather, “Doei, dooooe, doe doe, dag.” or my personal favorite, “Hoi. hoi, hoi. HOOOI.”
  5. The cooler temps. Don’t get me wrong, the drizzly weather can be pretty frustrating, specifically when it should be full-on summer. But actually getting to wear a light jacket when Fall rolls around is pretty sweet.

Feelin’ Off…

One of my favorite of-the-moment looksΒ is the Off-The-Shoulder trend.
It is a fun way to play with an otherwise predictable blouse and as an added bonus: it transitions easily into your Fall wardrobe.

You can pair it with your favorite denim or even shorts (in case the Texas Heat has you melting). πŸ˜‰

I’ve got to be honest, this blouse was so easy to throw on, I kinda felt like I was cheating. I mean, with very little effort I was dressed and feeling groovy in about 30 seconds. This shape looks good on everyone, and shows a little skin whilst still remaining relatively conservative. πŸ˜‰

Side note, I’m pretty sure I was born in the wrong era (hence flare jeans, platforms and psychedelic print).

We will be in Texas in less than 3 weeks Β (who’s counting, anyway??). Nearly 9 months away from the Lonestar State is just too long. Bring on the TEX MEX & TARGET, y’all.

Little To No Effort

So one of the things I love most about summer is the fact that getting ready is so much easier. Simple makeup and minimal layers. It just seems like with a flowy, light jumpsuit (as pictured), style can be achieved so much easier.

Full disclosure:
What I am really getting at is: how many days can dry shampoo really substitute for actual shampoo?? πŸ˜‰

I am all about making style accessible and combinable. Whilst outspoken pieces are fun, practicality is really important to take into consideration, specifically if you’re shopping on budget.

Side note, I searched for these platform Adidas Superstar shoes all over and could not find them as they were sold out EVERYWHERE. I finally found them via a semi-legit website, so whether they fell of the back of a truck somewhere between here and Asia is a bit of a mystery. Super comfy and fun to wear with dresses/skirts/jeans. I highly recommend finding a pair of sneaks you can combine with most of your daily wardrobe. Plus I feel like I’m right back in the 8th grade again. πŸ™‚

Jumpsuit: Bik Bok
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff
Sneakers: Adidas Superstar Rize

P.S. For those of you that aren’t on board with the Culotte trend yet, I have officially taken it a step further: Culotte jumpsuit.
