So for those of you who have not experienced it firsthand, let me tell you that the Dutch women have a superpower that I have yet to find anywhere else:
Riding a bike while wearing a skirt.
Like, who, in their right mind, can manage to wear a skirt, while riding a bike (and not showing the entire world their underpants), with two children fastened in (one in the front, one in the back, possibly more). Yes, this is a real thing and some women do it everyday.
Case in point:
I’ve come to the conclusion that Dutch women are just born with it.
It is the only logical explanation.
After 3 years I have finally ‘mastered’ the infamous Dutch ‘hop’ onto my bike. If you’re wondering what that is, it’s a very graceful manner in which the Dutch magically glide onto their saddle with seemingly no effort at all (there is much effort required, rest assured). The first time I got on a bike in Holland, Jeff laughed and informed me that a bike is in fact, NOT a horse and should not be approached in the same way (Texas, Y’ALL).
All that to say, for the first time today, this little number successfully rode around and did not flash anyone. That I know of. So maybe I’ve turned just a little Dutch after all…
